Off to a great start!

Day 1
20.5 miles

Well, we got off to a great start. It was a fairly cool day (47 degrees) and after the usual beginning picture taking, we fairly flew down the trail. We started with a great group of people. There was the group of three women we dubbed the I girls (they are from Idaho), the newly weds who are such a cute couple, Matt who started off with a very light pack because he had his parents supporting him for a couple of days, and Joe from Wisconsin. We met Joe and the I girls at Scout and Frodo's house.

It was overcast all day, which was perfect to keep our water consumption down, most of the water sources were dry.

We got to Hauser creek at mile 16. We found ourselves low on water and knew we had to get to Lake Morena 4 miles and a 1200 foot climb away. We had enough water for dinner and the climb out, but not enough to stay there and have breakfast and then climb out. We met a couple who we later found out didn't have enough water, and had to get some from other hikers. It took them 2 days to get to that point. We cooked our dinner, then started out at 6 pm.

The evening was beautiful, and soon the sun was setting. We got to the top of the climb just as it started to get dark, turned our headlamps on and continued into Lake Morena. The time was 8:30 pm.
We quickly set up our tents and quickly fell asleep. We were very proud of ourselves for making our miles.

The word of the day: Tenacity
