Angel the Camp Dog

All of the 2011 & 2012 thru hikers will remember our pet dog Angel. She was hanging around camp, doing tricks, and ingratiating herself in the hearts of all those hikers we hosted at Lava Camp Lake.
She was a puppy in 2011, and she was a Guide Dogs for the Blind puppy in training that year. Well, she didn't make guide dog, because of an aversion to riding in vehicles. She gets really nervous in moving cars, so she got cut from the program and is now our much loved pet.

By the summer of 2012, she had learned a bunch of new tricks that guide dog puppies aren't allowed to learn, and she tremendously enjoyed showing off her new skills of beg, shake, and a really weird roll over that you have to see to believe. She also now knows "Bang", and is really good at dropping to the ground when she gets shot. Our next step will be to get her to roll onto her side when she hears that word. But her favorite past time is Frisbee, and would play catch for hours up at Lava Camp Lake.

If any one would be interested in learning more about becoming a puppy raiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind just follow this link guidedogs.com click on the volunteer button, and you can find out more about how to join up. It has been the most fun and inspiring volunteer job we have ever had.
You will find yourself inspired by the blind people who will get your dog, and have a ton of fun along the way. You can be as young as 9 years old to be a puppy raiser, and get to raise a puppy for approx. a year. Be aware though, that you have to live in the western states to be a puppy raiser, but I think there are oppurtunities in Texas now. You can find out more by following the link.

This would be a great time to say a very huge Thank you  to our puppy sitters who have very graciously decided to put up with our cute, furry mischief maker while we are on the trail. So thank you many times over to Cindy and Tom Williams from our church, who will love and spoil Angel just as much as we do, maybe even more!

Tom & Cindy  - Supreme Puppy Sitters - Thank you!
