Jellyfish Legs

Jellyfish Legs
Our preparation for this truly extraordinary journey has been a herculean task.  We have learned what we need to do to give ourselves the best chance of connecting our steps and finishing what we started last time. This doesn't mean we will be successful, but we are better prepared for the lows the trail throws at us.

Part of the training we are doing is the physical exercise to get our bodies in shape for the grueling days ahead. As we are now a bit older, we have the usual aches and pains that getting older entails. Our joints are stiff in the morning, our usual dose of Glucosomine and Chondroitin should take care of that. That will be the least of our problems, as we hike for hours, we understand how stiff we will get, especially after resting a few minutes, then trying to stand and hike again!

Thus enters the jellyfish legs: What our legs feel like after working out at the gym! Since Oregon weather this time of year is not the best, and since we have about a half hours drive to any kind of decent trail, we have chosen to work out at the gym almost everyday. We trade off every workout with weights and treadmill. We are doing our workouts at The Courthouse Athletic Club, where the staff is knowledgeable and very helpful in providing the tips and training we need to be successful. Thank you all for being our personal cheering section!

Legasorus has been down to his trail weight for a couple of years now. He's lean and mean, and ready to tackle all the highs and lows in store for him. His only vice as of now is his smoking. He is really working hard to his credit to giving this up. Not easy, but he did it last time, so we still have hope. He can hike o.k. while still smoking, he knows he could do better without it.

Pocahontas has gained a little extra weight over the last 7 years, and is really struggling to take off a few pounds. She understands the freedom of taking less pounds along on this journey, but she can still pound off the miles better than she could 14 years ago. If she could do it then, she can definitely still do it now. It  may be that she will just have to wait to go on the 2600 mile diet. That should take off that extra weight!

We are also working on our core strength every night that we are watching T.V. Situps and pulses during the commercials go a long way towards strengthening our abs.

We feel so good after working out and we have been upping our weights and levels on the treadmill every few weeks. Our major downfall is just trying to get out our front door everyday to go workout. We are human with some faults, and excuse making is one of those faults. We definitely don't want to mislead readers by letting everyone think we are perfect and have it all together with respect to walking this trail. We don't, but as we take this journey, we will learn to adapt or we go home. That is all there is to it. And going home is not an option!!! This may be our last chance to experience this incredible undertaking, we are not about to waste this opportunity.

As of today, we have exactly 7 weeks until we get on that train bound for San Diego. Will we be ready? Stay tuned to find out!
