Actually, both of us have our moments of complete terror when faced with our personal phobias and fears. Pocahontas may freeze upon walking out onto a log over a creek, ahem, river, or come completely unglued by the sight of a tick crawling on anybody.
Not all fears are of the physical type. Some are buried deep in our psyche. Legasorus has fears of not completing the trail, while Pocahontas quakes at the thought of camping near trailheads on weekends when the yahoos come out of the woodwork. (Don't worry, well do our best to avoid this)
Of course, our parents are getting into the act of fretting for our safety. After all, the biggest, baddest bears and mountain lions are going to be on the trail this year. (Did you pack the grizzly gun)?
The trail is about coming face to face with these potential setbacks, and triumphing in the face of grave danger. As we set our feet northward, we will meet these and many more complications to our carefree days. How we meet these challenges will determine if we have what it takes to complete a thru hike.
We can't worry obsessively about every little thing that goes bump in the night, we would never make it to the northern terminus. Instead, we are going to march along, hold our heads up high, and hope we don't cowboy camp on top of a rattlesnake nest.
This is a fab post and spoken so spot on. I too worry about completing the trail AND water crossings AND snow AND wild critters AND creepy crawlys AND getting lost or hurt AND...AND...AND...
ReplyDeleteBut I'm finally holding on to my faith in God and trusting that He'll give us the strength courage and wisdom to do it. He's already blessed us with special friends!
Again, EXCELLENT blog.
Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement we get from you. Yes, God has blessed us also, and we'll get through this summer with His help.
